What Can Erectile Dysfunction Reveal About Your Health?

Couple having a serious conversation about erectile dysfunction and sexual health.

Erectile dysfunction is often treated as a private sexual health issue, but it can also point to something worth checking elsewhere in the body. In our men’s health care services for Tempe and Chandler, Arizona, Tempe Primary Care looks at ED in the context of your medications, symptoms, and medical conditions. Frank Rosenberg, FNP-C brings decades of healthcare experience to our team and completed advanced family nurse practitioner training at Northern Arizona University.

ED Can Have More Than One Cause

An occasional problem getting or keeping an erection can happen for many reasons. If it becomes persistent or keeps returning, it is worth discussing with a healthcare provider. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, ED is not a routine part of aging and may be related to problems involving blood vessels, nerves, hormones, medications, or emotional health.

That range of possible causes is why we ask more than one or two questions. We may talk about when the problem started, whether it happens consistently, your sleep, stress, alcohol or tobacco use, and any prescription or over-the-counter medicines you take.

Conditions that affect circulation and nerve function matter as well. High blood pressure and diabetes are both associated with erectile problems. Cholesterol and other cardiovascular risks may also be relevant. ED does not prove that heart or vascular disease is present, but it can be a reason to check those risk factors instead of treating the symptom by itself.

What Might an ED Evaluation Include?

The visit often includes blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, a medication discussion, and questions about mood or stress. Recent lab results can also help us avoid repeating tests that have already been completed. If symptoms suggest a hormone concern, testosterone testing may be appropriate. Our hormone therapy services include evaluation for low testosterone, but a low sex drive or ED does not automatically mean testosterone is the cause.

Treatment depends on what we find. Our men’s health services include ED evaluation, prescription treatment when appropriate, lifestyle counseling, and specialist referrals when further care is needed.

You do not need to wait until the problem is severe to mention it. A straightforward conversation can help separate a temporary issue from something that deserves further evaluation.
