Why Do Medication Reviews Matter More as You Get Older?

Older adult reviewing prescription medications with a healthcare provider.

A medication list can grow a little at a time. One prescription is added for blood pressure, another for diabetes, and an over-the-counter sleep aid or supplement may come later. Through geriatric primary care in Tempe and Chandler, Arizona, our Tempe Primary Care team helps older adults keep those moving parts organized. Frank Rosenberg, FNP-C has worked in healthcare since 1993 and completed family nurse practitioner training with an emphasis on rural health and underserved populations.

Why Your Medication List Can Get More Complicated With Age

Older adults often manage several medical conditions at the same time. The National Institute on Aging notes that taking multiple medicines can increase the risk of side effects and other unintended problems, especially when prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements are combined.

Going through everything you take gives us a chance to spot concerns that are easy to miss when each prescription is considered separately. We can check for duplicate ingredients, possible interactions, new side effects, dosing questions, and medicines that may need follow-up testing.

This is especially useful when you receive chronic condition management for more than one diagnosis. A medicine for high blood pressure, for example, has to fit alongside treatment for diabetes, heart disease, pain, sleep problems, or other concerns.

What Should You Bring to the Appointment?

Bring a current list of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, herbal products, and supplements. Include the dose, how often you take each item, and why you use it. If keeping a written list is difficult, bringing the medication bottles can also help.

Tell us about anything that has changed since a medicine was started or adjusted. Dizziness, stomach problems, unusual fatigue, confusion, or changes in sleep are worth mentioning. The timing can help us decide whether a symptom could be medication-related or whether another cause needs attention.

This is also a good time to ask practical questions. Do you still need a particular prescription? Are two products giving you the same active ingredient? Does it matter when you take them?

Do not stop a prescription on your own because you suspect a problem. Some medicines need to be reduced gradually, and changes should be made with medical guidance.
